We are bordered by the 400-mile long Sierra Nevada mountain range to the west and the State of Nevada to the east. The Eastern Sierra region encompasses an area more than 1,000 square miles larger than the state of Maryland, and much larger than eight other states. The local geography includes the highest point in the continental U.S., Mount Whitney, to the lowest point in the nation, Death Valley. Temperature and climate vary widely according to elevation. Significant snow in the mountains makes road conditions challenging for over half of the year.

Inyo County is the second largest in the state and the tenth largest county in the US. It has a population of 18, 467 people spread out over 10,477 square miles. The county has only one incorporated city, Bishop, with a population of 4,900. Mono County includes 3,044 square miles with a population of 12,774. To travel from the northern tip to the southern extreme of the service area requires driving over 350 road miles.
